Jazz Johnson
2026 MA Symposium
Jazz Johnson is a multidisciplinary artist, choreographer, and storyteller whose work explores the intersections of dance, film, memory, and Black cultural expression. Her creative practice centers choreographic storytelling as a tool for examining identity, spirituality, love, and collective memory. Drawing from Black performance traditions and contemporary visual media, Johnson creates work that bridges movement and narrative to invite reflection, connection, and transformation. She is particularly interested in the ways performance can communicate stories that exist beyond language and challenge conventional understandings of representation and freedom.
Project Title: All About Love
Project Description: Inspired by bell hooks’ All About Love, this dance film explores love as a transformative journey through loss, spirituality, and healing. Through movement, visual storytelling, and embodied emotion, the work examines how experiences of heartbreak, self-discovery, and restoration shape our understanding of love. Drawing from hooks’ belief that love is an action and a practice, the film invites viewers to reflect on the ways love can both wound and liberate, ultimately offering a pathway toward wholeness.
Project Inspiration: This project was inspired by bell hooks’ All About Love and Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade. Drawing from hooks’ exploration of love as a practice of growth and healing, and Lemonade’s use of visual storytelling to depict an emotional journey, the film translates themes of loss, spirituality, and healing into movement and cinematic imagery.
