ITP Fellow Kat Mustatea presented an excerpt performance of ielele/BodyMouth at ONX Studio on Monday, June 12th, as part of their Summer Showcase at TriBeCa Film Festival. This is the project she was working on during her project fellowship at ITP/IMA the past year.

ielele / BodyMouth is a series of live performances in which dancers wear sensors on their bodies to sound out words by enacting specific gestures in sequence—literally turning the body into a mouth (project brief here). “ielele,” are female forest creatures in Romanian folklore whose eerie voices led men astray: whoever heard their songs became instantly mute. This project is supported through commissions from New York State Council on the Arts and the Romanian Cultural Institute New York. Additional support and residencies through Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center, Nancy Manocherian’s the cell theatre, New York University’s IMA / ITP Program, and ONX Studios.
