gARden Cards

ITP Student Lydia Jessup's team won the Mixed Reality category at the Reality Virtually Hackathon in January at the MIT Media Lab.

Per Lydia:

We made a project called gARden cards, a AR/VR get well soon card that friends can collaboratively build for a friend/relative/colleague in the hospital. Using a website, each friend chooses a flower that they can attach a written and/or voice message to for their loved one and “plant” in the virtual garden. The recipient receives a physical card that has instructions on how to view it in AR or VR. In either format, the recipient can explore the garden their friends have planted for them and see the plants grow and bloom over their stay in the hospital. In VR, the recipient can navigate with gaze gestures, moving their head left and right 30 degrees to make the garden planet spin. We designed it this way instead of requiring controllers so that it could be accessible to someone who is has to stay in bed or has limited mobility. When the recipient hovers over a flower, they see the written message from their friend and they hear the voice message play.
