IMA alumna Julia Fernandez (IMA ‘23) is gaining recognition for her innovative use of ceramics in stop-motion animation. Fernandez was recently commissioned by The New York Times to create a ceramic tile animation of a beating heart for their piece, "This Valentine’s Day, Consider the Real Heart."

Prior to this feature, Fernandez created a music video for the band Emory, which utilized over 300 hand-painted ceramic tiles. Her process and the technical mastery behind her work were recently highlighted in a feature on This Is Colossal, where she noted, “Seeing a material that’s supposed to be still and permanent begin to move felt like magic, like I had cracked some code in reality to create movement that should otherwise be impossible.”
