Generative content creators. Self-driving vehicles. Predictive analytics. Data collections. In the right hands, they’re beneficial to all. In the wrong hands, they amplify human bias and harm vulnerable people.

In this fireside chat, we will discuss how to realize the extraordinary potential of artificial intelligence, while reducing its risks. Its 7 principles draw on Juliette Powell’s research at Columbia University, on a wealth of real-life examples, and on emerging regulations like Europe’s AI Act.

As a consultant at the intersection of technology, business and ethics, Juliette Powelll has advised large (and in some cases quite famous) companies on the questions of how to deal with the accelerating change that is underway due to AI-enabled technological innovation coupled with shifting social dynamics and heightened global competition.

Juliette’s research at Columbia university is informed by her work with multinational companies like Intel Labs and with governmental institutions where she is focussed on the responsible deployment of AI, ethical data exploration, as well as the search and removal of negative biases.

Juliette identifies the patterns and practices of successful business leaders who bank on ethical AI and data to win. She is on faculty at NYU's ITP where she teaches four courses, including Design Skills for Responsible Media, a course based on The AI Dilemma (August 2023).

Art Kleiner is a writer, editor, and entrepreneur with a background in technology and business culture. He is a longstanding faculty member at NYU-ITP and IMA, where his courses include co-teaching Responsible Technology and the Future of Media (scenarios).

Besides The AI Dilemma (coauthored with Juliette Powell), his books include The Age of Heretics (2008), Who Really Matters (2003) and The Wise Advocate (coauthored with Jeffrey Schwartz and Josie Thomson, 2019).

Art was editor-in-chief of Strategy+Business and the best-selling Fifth Discipline Fieldbook series. He oversaw coverage of computer technology at the Whole Earth Catalog.
