Black History Month Guest spEAKER SERIES

You are invited to our Thursday Night Talk/Black History Month Guest Series: "A Conversation with Marilyn!"

Marilyn Nance has produced photographs of unique moments in the cultural history of the U.S. and the African Diaspora, culminating in an archive of images of late 20th-century African American life. A 2022 Magnum Foundation Counter Histories Fellow, Nance is a two-time finalist for the W. Eugene Smith Award in Humanistic Photography. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), and the Library of Congress, and has been published in The World History of Photography, History of Women in Photography, and The Black Photographers Annual.

Nance, who attended ITP from 1996-1998, will talk about the intersection of Black History and tech history.

Zakiya Collier is an Afro-Carolinian archivist and memory worker exploring the role of cooperative thought and improvisation in the preservation and sustainability of immaterial cultural memory—particularly in African-diasporan, queer, and community-based organizations and cultural heritage institutions. She is passionate about uncovering ancestral memory-keeping traditions and developing archival practices that account for the material conditions of Black life.
