AFROTECTOPIA IS SOLD OUT!

NYU’S INTERACTIVE TELECOMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM TO HOST AFROTECTOPIA, A NEW MEDIA ART, CULTURE, AND TECHNOLOGY FESTIVAL

New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at NYU Tisch School of the Arts will host AFRO•TEC•TOPIA, a new media art, culture, and technology festival designed to recognize the contributions of black artists, designers, technologists, and activists, as well as convene people currently working at the intersection of art, design, technology, activism, and blackness. Taking place March 10-11, 2018, the festival is a student-led initiative that intends to create a space that welcomes visionary thinking and explores ways to act through presentations, open-dialogue, and thoughtful forms of engagement.

Among the long list of revered presenters and panelists are Dev Hynes (also known as Blood Orange), a Grammy award-winning artist, songwriter, producer, and author; Leah Gilliam, vice president of education and product development at Girls Who Code; and Brandon Bryant, founder of Wall Street Paper and co-founder of Harlem Capital Partners. Opening remarks will be delivered by Lisa Coleman, NYU’s chief diversity officer, and Afrotectopia Founder and Producer Ari Melenciano, who is currently completing her master’s at ITP.

“At a time when racial injustice and systematic oppression still create large barriers for Black creatives, it is important to cultivate community that allows for easy dissemination of knowledge, opportunities, and possibilities in the efforts to realize a more equitable world,” stated Ari Melenciano. “At Afrotectopia, we are especially passionate about catalyzing Black agency through the celebration of culture and the use of new media arts and technology.”
