Image Photograph

cover art for Image photograph - a hand and some framed photos

In his book, Image Photograph Marc Lafia gives description to a new regime of visuality, not of the image but imaging, how photography is only one realm of imaging and the instrumentation of the network is an entirely new kind of seeing, constituting a new kind of body politic. In his talk Lafia will describe how as an artist and essayist he takes up the prescribed space of the photograph and, by touring the new conditions of imaging, remaps the very space of photography.

Image Photograph is an in-depth, critical and personal accounting of Marc Lafia’s image practice, putting into the frame of photography, the repertoires of the networked image, as they redefine identity, performance, portraiture, curation, and archiving in the post-digital age.

At once artist book and critical theory, Image Photograph takes its direction from Walter Benjamin’s Arcades, John Berger’s Ways of Seeing and, more recently, Hito Steyerl’s The Wretched of the Screen. Throughout it, Lafia not only writes about the image but constructs images — and, finally, performs this new space of the image-photograph.
