At the 73rd Director’s Guild of America Awards, alumna Chloé Zhao won the marquee prize, Outstanding Directing Feature Film, for Nomadland.

This award marks yet another history-making moment for Zhao in a series of many, becoming the first woman of color and the second woman (after Kathryn Bigelow in 2009) to earn the top DGA Award. With Nomadland, Zhao became the first woman ever named PSIFF’s Director of the Year, the first woman of color to win the Best Director award at the Golden Globe Awards, and the first woman of color ever to be nominated for the Best Director Oscar.  In her DGA acceptance speech, she thanked the other nominees for their contributions to film and for inspiring writer-directors such as herself.
