“The Salt in Our Waters”
The 44th Göteborg Film Festival has nominated Alum Rezwan Shahriar Sumit’s The Salt in Our Waters for the prestigious Ingmar Bergman Award.
The Göteborg Film Festival is the largest film festival in Northern Europe, and the award is a film prize for new talents within international filmmaking. Sumit’s film follows a sculptor who, while visiting a remote fishing village on the Bangladeshi Delta, finds himself center stage in a primal, elemental conflict between land and sea, man and nature, past and future.
Sumit spoke to Variety about the origin of his feature debut: “Back home, liberals and conservatives were clashing over decades-old, unresolved injustices. I started seeing the fishing community as a microcosm of Bangladesh, in unity as in division.”
The festival will run from Jan. 29-Feb.8, 2021.
