This week’s installment of NYU Grad Film’s Streaming Spotlight features Emmy Award-winning Cary Joji Fukunaga. The alumnus has had an incredibly dynamic career, creating, writing and directing content ranging from period dramas to sci-fi TV. Most recently, Fukunaga directed the highly-anticipated, upcoming James Bond installment No Time to Die, which will be released November 25th, 2020. “Sin Nombre”
Sin Nombre (2009): A critically acclaimed film about a Honduran young girl and a Mexican gangster, who are united in a journey across the American border. Fukunaga wrote and directed. The New York Times recognized it as "an almost preposterously ambitious undertaking for a first-time filmmaker" that "beautifies and softens every ugly moment."
“Jane Eyre”
Jane Eyre (2011): This Oscar-nominated film, based on Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 novel, follows a mousy governess who softens the heart of her employer only to discover that he's hiding a terrible secret. Starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender.
“Maniac”
Maniac (2018): A sci-fi TV mini-series where two strangers are drawn to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial that will, they're assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently; things do not go as planned. Starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. Fukunaga created and directed.
“True Detective”
True Detective (2014- ): A seasonal anthology series in which police investigations unearth the personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law. Fukunaga directed all eight episodes of Season 1, earning him an Outstanding Directing Emmy. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan.
“Beasts of No Nation”
Beasts of No Nation (2015): As civil war rages in Africa, a fierce warlord (Idris Elba) trains a young orphan (Abraham Attah) to join his group of guerrilla soldiers. Written and directed by Fukunaga.
