Drama alum Sam Pinkleton was awarded Best Director at the Tony Awards this week for his work on Oh, Mary!
Presented by the American Theatre Wing, the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre—better known as the Tony Award—honors outstanding achievement in Broadway Theater.
Prior to Oh, Mary!, Pinkleton (Drama ‘09) collaborated on several recent Broadway productions, including Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812, Macbeth, and Amélie, A New Musical.
Oh, Mary!—hailed by The New York Times as "one of the best comedies in years"—is a darkly comic reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln’s life in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The production took home two Tony Awards this year: Best Direction of a Play and Best Leading Actor in a Play.
In addition to its Tony wins, Oh, Mary! received Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
