M.A. Arts Politics Class of 2020

B.A. Art History, International Relations and Global Studies, University of Texas at Austin

MJ Tom (she/it) is an NYC-based cultural producer interested in exploring alternative modes of kinship available via sex work, queer s/m, digital landscapes, and cultural ancestry. It and its work have appeared at Satellite Art Fair, NowThis, the Leslie Lohman Museum, Performa, and MoMA PS1, among others. At parties, it likes asking couples how they met, and what their favorite thing is about each other.

What drew you to the M.A. in Arts Politics?

The Arts Politics M.A. is one of the few that not only examines resistance movements, but offers a space to practice different modalities for cultural activism. I am heavily invested in the work I funnel into community, and this program has never forced me to choose between academia and application. I’m looking forward to exploring what’s available, honoring the work that has come before me, and building out a creative toolbox to better be in service of my community.
