Memories of the Revolution: Locating Lesbian Culture in the Age of Queer

event flyer

Panel discussion in conjunction with the publication of Memories of The Revolution: The First Ten Years of the WOW Café Theater (University of Michigan Press), a new anthology of scripts, monologues, photos and interviews from the first decade of feminist and queer performance venue WOW (Women’s One World) Café.

WOW has been a vital part of New York City’s downtown theatre and performance scene since 1982 – a self-declared “Home for the Wayward Girls,” and a venue for feminist, lesbian and, more recently, trans performers to create, perform and foment a cultural revolution. The Fales Library will host a conversation between several WOW alumnae, in dialogue with the theatre historian and critic Alisa Solomon and performance studies scholar Ann Pellegrini. Panelists will address the impact of feminist and lesbian voices on the downtown New York culture of the eighties and nineties, and discuss the legacy of WOW for current generations.
