In 2018, Kyle Abraham '06 (MFA, Dance) made waves in the dance world with his ballet, The Runaways, in which he fused classical dance elements with contemporary sounds and movements.

Today, he is navigating what it means to be a dancer and a choreographer after a year in the pandemic. His new piece for City Ballet, When We Fell, premiered on the New York City Ballet website on Thursday, April 8.

The New York Times interviewed Abraham ahead of his premiere, learning more about how the pandemic affected him and his process, and how he developed When We Fell.

“There were a lot of hardships to deal with, and so many unknowns for all of us,” he said. “I tried to look at it as a blessing, to use online rehearsal time to talk” — something that would be too expensive in normal circumstances — “but it was challenging.” - Kyle Abraham
