After an extensive, highly competitive national search, Dr. Artel Great '17 (PhD, GSAS/Cinema Studies) was recently selected as the George and Judy Marcus Endowed Chair in African-American Cinema Studies at the San Francisco State University, School of Cinema!

This is a deep honor and a prestigious appointment that comes with an important mandate to produce publicly-engaged scholarship in the form of speaking engagements, film programming and events, artist talks, lecture series, and other public curatorial work.

Great plans on using this new platform to provide important historical contexts, address issues of equity and inclusion, issues of race in film and popular culture, and to amplify the voices of Black filmmakers and scholars who have been marginalized for far too long. Along with his selection as endowed chair, he has been appointed Assistant Professor of Critical Studies in Cinema and will be teaching newly designed courses on Black cinema and visual culture and race in Hollywood.

“I look forward to teaching about the rich contributions, culture and politics of Black cinema in both the American context and across the African diaspora.” Dr. Artel Great '17
