Production designer Kalina Ivanov '83 (BFA, Design for Stage and Film) / '89 (MFA, Kanbar Institute, Film & TV) recently discussed her work creating lavish sets for HBO's Sunday night smash hit, Lovecraft Country.
Set in the 1950s, the 10-episode series features connecting stories highlighting the indignities of the racial caste system of the time. Lovecraft Country is a fantastical sci-fi drama full of history, timely cultural metaphors, symbolism, and detail-oriented period interiors. The show is based off of a 2016 book by the same name in which characters are confronted with evils both supernatural and all too real in nature.
