Martha Bowers
Instructor in Drama
Director/choreographer/arts educator, is the Executive Director of Dance Theatre Etcetera. A recipient of choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Council for the Arts, the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art, she also has received numerous commissions; Dancing in the Streets, the 651/Kings Majestic-An Arts Center, the Taipei Theater, MASS MoCA, the Institute for Choreography and Dance/Ireland, the Brooklyn Arts Exchange and the Wagon Train Project, among others. Over the last twenty years, she has been experimenting with site-specific work peopled by diverse casts. From the mussel boats of Wexford, Ireland to the train yards of Lincoln, Nebraska, her performance events have brought a prismatic view to locations and ways of life that challenge audiences to see the mystery in familiar surroundings. She is nationally known for her ten years of work making the arts a component of urban renewal efforts in the waterfront community of Red Hook, Brooklyn. Dance Theatre Etcetera produces the annual Red Hook Waterfront Arts Festival. In addition, she teaches at NYU's Gallatin School and is the Education Director at The Kitchen.
