Richard Move

Richard Move, PhD, MFA is a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow, New York Public Library Dance Research Fellow, TED Global Oxford Fellow, and Artistic Director of MoveOpolis!

Move's choreographic commissions include productions for Mikhail Baryshnikov and the White Oak Dance Project, two works for the Martha Graham Dance Company, a solo for New York City Ballet Principal, Heléne Alexopoulos, and a trio for PARADIGM - Carmen De Lavallade, Gus Solomons, Jr. and Dudley Williams.

In 2025, Move makes their BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) debut with Martha@BAM – The 1963 Interview, presented by BAM’s Next Wave Festival, featuring Move with Tony Award winning actor and playwright, Lisa Kron, along with Catherine Cabeen and PeiJu Chien-Pott.

Move’s site-specific works include creations for the Cannes Film Festival, Guggenheim Museum/New York, European Capital of Culture/France, Asian Civilizations Museum/Singapore, Parrish Art Museum, and a bus station in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Move’s Herstory of the Universe@Governors Island, the first performance commissioned by the Trust for Governors Island, was named “Best Dance of 2021” by The New York Times. Herstory of the Universe@Dartmouth, commissioned by Dartmouth College’s Hopkins Center for the Arts, premiered in 2023.

In 2022, Move choreographed Snow White for the incarcerated actors of the Theater Company of Larino Prison in Larino, Italy, with director Giandomenico Sale. Move collaborated with Sale on a new production, Iconica, which premiered in Italy in 2024.

While Resident Artist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia in 2018, Move collaborated with Astronaut - Artist Dr. Sarah Jane Pell on two new works, Stellar Corpus and LunAres, that unite the extreme performance of human spaceflight training with VR, immersive data visualizations, interactive 3D and live motion capture exhibited in 360°. Their collaboration will travel in a micro-book time capsule to the Moon’s South Pole in 2025.

MoveOpolis! has been presented by New York Live Arts, Dance Theater Workshop, The Kitchen, Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, MASS MoCA, LMCC's Sitelines, and on tour internationally. MoveOpolis! collaborators include fashion designers Alba Clemente, Patricia Field and Isaac Mizrahi, visual artists Charles Atlas, Pulitzer winning author Hilton Als, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Debbie Harry of Blondie.

Move’s works as filmmaker include: Bardo - Jury Prize nominee at Lincoln Center’s Dance on Camera Festival; BloodWork: The Ana Mendieta Story - National Board of Review Award/Directors Guild of America; GhostLight - Tribeca Film Festival premiere, and GIMP - The Documentary, Lincoln Center’s Dance on Camera Festival premiere.

Martha@..., Move's Performances of 20th century icon, Martha Graham, received two New York Dance and Performance Awards ("Bessies") and tours globally. In 2017, the Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts commissioned Move's restaging and performance of Graham's once lost solo from 1928, Immigrant.

Dr. Move’s recent publications include chapters for: Border Crossings: Exile and American Dance; The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Reenactment; Ally - Janine Antoni, Anna Halprin and Stephen Petronio and Rhythm Field - The Dance of Molissa Fenley.

At NYU, Move curated and produced Where is Ana Mendieta? Donde esta Ana Mendieta? 25 Years Later – An Exhibition and Symposium on the life and work of the artist Ana Mendieta.

Move earned their PhD, MPhil, and MA in Performance Studies at New York University, after receiving their MFA in Media Arts Production from CUNY/The City College of New York, and their BFA in Dance from Virginia Commonwealth University. Before joining the NYU Tisch faculty, Move served as Assistant Professor at CUNY/Queens College and as Lecturer in Design and M.F.A. Thesis Advisor at Yale University’s School of Drama.
