Scott Saul, Professor of English at University California, Berkley and author of "Becoming Richard Pryor," will talk through a few ways he reframes our understanding of Richard Pryor, pegged to some basic discoveries he made about his life and his artistic sensibility and "the intimate public sphere" created by his work. Followed by a conversation with Eric Lott, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at CUNY, Graduate Center.
This talk examines two celebrity biopics: "Sophia Loren, Her Own Story," where Loren plays herself and her mother, and Carlo Velo’s "Torero" (1956), a film that retraces Luis Procuna the Mexican matador, intercutting newsreel footage of the actual Procuna (as well as a host of other bullfighters) with reconstructed scenes of his awaited return to the arena.
