Department of Photography & Imaging Chair Dr. Deborah Willis and Adjunct Professor Dr. Kalia Brooks were recently included in a panel of experts to nominate up-and-coming African-American photographers for Time LightBox.
In addition to Dr. Willis and Dr. Brooks, the panel included acclaimed artist Carrie Mae Weems and Director of the African Artists' Foundation Azu Nwagbogu among other important figures in the field.
Dr. Willis wrote the following in response to Joshua Rashaad McFadden's artwork, pictured above:
“Come to Selfhood is an important and "I-opening" project! I am excited to see how Joshua Rashaad McFadden used The Family of Men Photographic Archive to extend his own conversation about visualizing masculinity. This project will be viewed as a corrective as well as a fascinating collective story about imaging the black male portrait from the turn of the 20th century to today. McFadden is a masterful photographer-new wave archivist who has unveiled a thoughtful and dazzling visual narrative of the 'self'.”
