Self-portrait of Paul Mpagi Sepuya
DPI is proud to highlight the remarkable achievements of our 2003 alum, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, who will be featured in the UCLA Hammer Museum’s upcoming "Voices of the Diaspora" panel on February 22, 2025. Sepuya, an acclaimed Los Angeles-based artist known for his powerful photography work, joins a distinguished group of artists, curators, and art historians for this free public program.
The panel will delve into strategies for fostering transformative change and inclusivity in arts education, with a focus on the ways artists of various diasporas challenge traditional academic structures. Sepuya's own work, which has been showcased at leading institutions like the Getty, Guggenheim, and Whitney Museum, reflects these themes through his innovative approach to photography. His recent projects, such as the "Daylight Studio / Dark Room Studio" series, push boundaries and reshape conversations around identity, representation, and artistic practice.
The panel, organized by the Asian American Pacific Islander Arts Network, will be moderated by independent curator and art historian Danielle Shang. The event is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage our Tisch alumni community to attend and support Sepuya’s continued impact on contemporary art and education.
