Miro Spinelli Publishes Essay in Fat Performance

Tuesday, Sep 8, 2026

Performance Studies PhD candidate Miro Spinelli’s essay, “Fatness, Writing, and Performance: The Unmaking of the Unfinished Body/Text,” has just been published in Fat Performance—the first edited collection to bring together scholarship and artistic practices specifically focused on the field.

Drawing on Spinelli’s ongoing Gordura Trans (Trans Fat) project, the essay explores fatness as an incomplete and transformative force, bringing together questions of embodiment, performance, writing, and audience engagement. It challenges conventional distinctions between body and text, subject and object, and considers “unmaking” as an ongoing process of transformation.

The volume brings together scholars, artists, and activists working across dance, theater, live art, photography, film, comedy, community practice, and performance in everyday life, establishing fat performance as an expansive and multidisciplinary field of artistic practice and scholarly inquiry.
