New Musicals featured at National Alliance for Musical Theatre Festival
The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) 37th Annual Festival of New Musicals was held at New World Stages in New York City on October 23 and 24. Eight new musicals were featured, including four by Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program alums.
ALICE BLISS, with music by Jenny Giering (cycle 6), follows Alice as she navigates tenth grade while dealing with reality of her dad being deployed in Iraq. PARTICLE, with book co-written and music by Derek Gregor (cycle 12), is a story about connection, following Cora through a championship in the world of elite gaming. THE KING OF HARLEM, with book, lyrics, and music co-written by David Gomez (cycle 25), follows Mercy Wheatley, a Black prize fighter making his way at the height of the Harlem Renaissance. ROJA, with book, lyrics, and music by Jaime Lozano (cycle 18) and Tommy Newman (cycle 15), is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood using Mexican folk music and Mestizo folklore.
