LINCOLN IN THE BARDO, a new opera with libretto by Graduate Musical Theatre Writing alum Royce Vavrek (Cycle 16), will run at the Metropolitan Opera from October 19 to November 14, 2026.

Based on George Saunders’ Booker Prize–winning novel, this supernatural opera features a score by Missy Mazzoli, the Met's first world premiere by a female composer since 1883. The story follows Abraham Lincoln as he grieves the death of his 11-year-old son, Willie.

Vavrek is an award-winning librettist who has written extensively for the stage and is one of the most in-demand artists in the field today. Among his achievements is the libretto for his opera ANGEL'S BONE, with a score by Du Yun, which won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for music.
