Graduate Musical Theatre Program alum Joel B. New (Cycle 15) presented his new movie musical comedy UNDERTAKING CHRISTMAS on December 19th, 2020.
Billed as an "unofficial Hallmark Channel Original Movie musical comedy" the show follows party planner Nick Holliday, who returns to his quaint hometown of Sadness, Indiana, to save the family funeral home from going six feet under right before Christmas.
Hailed as one of “the best Christmas shows in NYC” by TimeOut New York, Undertaking Christmas is a loving send-up of the Hallmark Channel Original Holiday Movie genre, except deliberately daffy in its use of tropes and centering around a same-sex love story, with one of the lovers being plus-size. Sadly, this popular genre has shied away from telling LGBTQ+ stories…so far. Undertaking Christmas boldly says we deserve stupid tropey love stories, too.
