GMTWP Alums Jessie Field and Brandy Hoang Collier (both Cycle 29) launched their "Living Room Stories!" this past September as the inaugural event for their new theatre company Root Beer Occasion, LLC. The event streamed six brand new, fully staged, fully designed short plays - all performed in a living room. It featured the work of playwrights Mallory Jane Weiss, Johanna C. Soleyn, Tristen Moseley, Kathy Ng, Wes Braver, and Amy Blakelock, as well as actors Kalonjee Gallimore, Jessie Rae Jordan, Lisette Santiago, Logan Alexis Troyer, and Jinho Woo.
Root Beer Occasion Theatre Company, LLC was started when Brandy Hoang Collier and Jessie Field met after graduating the Program where amidst growing fears about the survival of theatre as a sustainable artform, the two were inspired to come together and search for a solution. A few root beers were shared over a video call, and Root Beer Occasion Theatre Company LLC. was born – a Brooklyn-based company determined to create real theatre experiences despite any and all obstacles; to reject snobbishness and empty art in favor of honesty, truth, and vulnerability; and to foster sustainable theatre that is both affordable and accessible.
From virtual events to playwriting salons to resources for writers, RBO will be actively working to support artists in these uncertain times and beyond.
