United Talent Agency (UTA) has signed alumnus Ian Barling for worldwide representation in all areas.
This news comes after the premiere of Barling’s NYU Thesis film Safe at Cannes 2021. The film, which received the Spike Lee Production Fund and a Panavision New Filmmaker Grant, follows the manager of a defunct casino who must reckon with his parental failures when his unruly son needs help out of an illicit bind. It was the first U.S. short to compete at Critics’ Week in over four years.
Barling is currently working on his feature debut Francis, which - similarly to Safe - reflects on his fascination with his home city, Atlantic City. He will bring the project to the Torino FilmLab, which supports creatives working on their first and second feature films.
