Grad Film at Tribeca 2021

The lineup for the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival has been announced, and many members of the Grad Film community have been selected to participate in the prestigious festival.  Here are our student and alumni selections:

“Catch the Fair One”

“Catch the Fair One”

Catch the Fair One: written and directed by alumn Josef Kubota Wladyka, the feature centers on a former champion boxer who embarks on the fight of her life when she goes in search of her missing sister. The film is produced by alumni Mollye Asher and Kimberly Parker, and will get its world premiere in the festival’s U.S. narrative competition.

“Cracked”

“Cracked”

Cracked (New York, New York 2021): written and directed by alumna Lin Que Ayoung, the drama short is set in 1985 in Queens, New York. Toya falls in love for the first time. Before she has a chance to sneak outside to see him, her father delivers some bad news. Although Toya brushes it off, it seems to be affecting her every move. After she witnesses a disturbing event, Toya musters the courage to open up about her past. Cracked is Ayoung’s Thesis film. The film was DPd by fellow alum Lorena Duran, and the festival marks its World Premiere.

“Esther in Wonderland”

“Esther in Wonderland”

Esther in Wonderland (New York, New York 2021): directed by alumna Stephanie Bollag, the short centers on Hasidic, married, young Esther, who - drawn to the power of hip hop and the expressiveness of breakdance - tests the boundaries of her restricted existence in 90s Crown Heights. The festival marks its World Premiere.

“Cherry Lemonade”

“Cherry Lemonade”

Cherry Lemonade (Shining Stars): written and directed by alumna Aisha Ford, the short follows eleven-year-old Phoenix, who has always yearned to be the IT girl but can’t shake her tomboyish ways. When her abrasive older brother, Kurt, breaks a promise, Phoenix ventures out on her own to a local corner store. 

Tribeca will also feature in-person premieres from it’s 2020 lineup. Alumna Kate Tsang’s Marvelous and the Black Hole, alumnus Bo McGuire’s Socks on Fire, and Professor Alexandre Rockwell’s Sweet Thing (co-produced by alum Haley Elizabeth Anderson) will all screen.
