When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 94th Oscars, alumnus Reinaldo Marcus Green’s King Richard earned nominations in 6 categories, and adjunct professor Tod Maitland snagged his fifth lifetime nomination.
“King Richard”
King Richard, the dramatic biopic about Venus and Serena Williams’s father Richard Williams, is one of the top nominees of the night, and one of the 10 films nominated for the coveted Best Picture award. It also received nominations for Best Film Editing, Best Original Song, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor.
“West Side Story”
Maitland is nominated in the Best Sound category for his work on Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, which is also nominated for Best Picture. This marks his fifth nomination by the Academy, following nominations for Born on the Fourth of July (1989), JFK (1991), Seabiscuit (2003), and Joker (2020).
In a feature profile for MIX, Maitland said,"I’ve worked on 100 movies, and I’ve never worked on anything quite at this level. It is huge, it is beautiful, it is basically a masterclass in filmmaking on every single department.”
The ceremony will take place on Sunday March 27th.
