At the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards, alumna Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland triumphed in all the major categories, and alum Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah received deserved recognition.

Zhao herself won three awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture, the last of which she shares with fellow alum and producer Mollye Asher. Alum Joshua James Richards received the Best Cinematography award for his work on the film, which the LA Times called “unbelievably gorgeous.”

King’s Judas and the Black Messiah won Daniel Kaluuya the Best Supporting Actor award. King recently stated that he “wouldn’t have made the film without Kaluuya - he’s one of the best actors in the world.”

The Critics’ Choice Awards is known to be the closest predictor of the corresponding year’s Academy Awards, the 2021 nominations of which will be announced on March 15.
