The 2019 Black Reel Awards nominations were just announced, and alumni Julius Onah and Nikyatu Jusu; and Professor Kasi Lemmons are all featured nominees.
Alum Julius Onah’s Luce received 6 total nominations. Onah is personally nominated for 4 including Outstanding Director, Outstanding Emerging Director, Outstanding Screenplay and Outstanding Independent Feature. Octavia Spencer and Kevin Harrison Jr. also received an Outstanding Supporting Actress and Outstanding Actor nominations respectively.
Professor Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet also received 6 total nominations, including Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Costume Design, Outstanding Production Design, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Janelle Monae and Outstanding Actress for Cynthia Erivo. Lemmons is personally nominated for Outstanding Director. (Lemmons and Julius make up two of only five nominees in the category.)
Alum Nikyatu Jusu’s Suicide By Sunlight is nominated for Oustanding Short Film.
