Graduate Play Thesis

Description: Each student is allotted a thesis reading to showcase a full length play which the student has written. This reading is to take place in the same semester as the student is graduation.

Thesis Check Sheet:
Students are required to complete the Thesis Check Sheet, which outlines the details of the individual’s students thesis reading.  In order to do this, each student must create a folder in their nyu google drive and title it with their name followed by “Thesis reading” (Jane SmithThesis Reading). Then the student will share that folder with appropriate DDW staff. When there folder has been received then they can simply upload their Thesis check sheet into their folder.

Date, Time, and Schedule: Each student will receive a 2 and 1⁄2 hour time slot at the end of the semester for their thesis reading. Dates and time cannot be changed once announced.

Director/Actor(s): Writers taking part in the Graduate Play Thesis readings may hire their own director and/or actors to take part in their reading or they may have their director cast actors for their readings. Actors and directors may be paid $200 per show by filling out the proper paperwork prior to the reading.

READING LIMITATIONS:

This is a reading, not a presentation. The main purpose of the reading is for the audience to hear the script. Chairs, music stands, black theater boxes are available for your use in the show. You may also request the use of a folding table. There should be no blocking, props, costumes, scenery, makeup, etc.

PRINTING:

Students are allowed to print full copies of their script at the DDW front desk. This is an one time only allotment. Documents involving your thesis should be sent to the front desk for printing. To ensure punctual printing, we recommend sending your documents before 9AM.

INTERMISSIONS:

You may choose to include an intermission in your reading. Intermissions may last up to 10 minutes to ensure that readings stay on time. Please denote intermission in thesis check sheet.

RECEPTIONS:

You have the option of holding a reception in the Dramatic Writing lobby after your reading. You are responsible for providing the food/beverage and for the setup and cleanup. If a reading is taking place in the theater then the reception may be relocated to a free classroom. If no classroom is available then you must keep the reception at a quiet volume level. Undergraduate students MAY NOT bring wine or other alcoholic beverages  for a reception, this is a university wide rule. Graduate students may bringwine with the understanding that they are responsible for it. Refreshments may be stored in the production office as long as you have made it clear  that you are having a reception ahead of time. Please denote intermission in thesis check sheet.

THEATER TECH:

Each reading will have a “tech call” a half hour before their scheduled reading. That means, if you have a 7PM reading start time then your tech call is at 6:30PM. During your tech call, your director may work with the booth technician to set the lights for the show and go over the opening cue and closing cue of your show. For example, you can fade into theopening/beginning, then have a blackout cue for the end. For an intermission, you are permitted to set those cues as well. In addition, you may play music at “doors open” to set the mood as your audience takes their seats. The same thing goes for the end of your show after your reading has come to an end.

TECH SPECIAL REQUEST:

If your play has a technical special request (such an extremely important sound cue or specific light change) then you may email me at least a week in advance of your show and we can discuss the merits of your request. If it is approved then you will be allowed to have an additional cue in your show. Please note that this would only be approved if shown to be imperative to your show even within the context of a reading.
