In celebration of the Drama Department's 50th Anniversary, TISCH DRAMA STAGE presents Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. The production is directed by Kent Gash. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, eleven Drama Desk Awards, and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, Sondheim called Sweeney Todd a dark operetta and a horror movie for the stage. This classic musical melodrama was inspired by the legend of Sweeney Todd, originating in "Penny Dreadfuls," cheap, tabloid newspapers popular in Victorian England.
Unjustly exiled by the corrupt Judge Turpin who covets the young barber's beautiful wife Lucy, Sweeney returns to London to find her lost and his daughter abducted by the Judge. Vowing to avenge his family and destroy the Judge, Sweeney sets up shop with his old neighbor and new accomplice, Nellie Lovett, proprietor of a failing meat shop... soon made successful thanks to Sweeney's bloody barbering and insatiable drive for revenge.
