Tisch Drama Theatre Studies students launch the Iris Cantor Theater with a performance of Gertrude Stein plays -- one of many ways the department is activating the new venue.

On Monday, October 2, Tisch Drama’s Theatre Studies faculty and students celebrated the first performance in the new Iris Cantor Theater, presenting a staged reading of a selection of plays by Gertrude Stein. The readings were performed by students in Noah Ortega’s Avant-Garde class for students in Tisch Drama’s Introduction to Theatre Studies course.

The performance was an example of Tisch Drama’s dual use of the new theater—combining curricular and production opportunities for students and faculty. Alisa Zhulina, the department’s Director of Theater Studies, elaborated: “The stage reading performance was also a pedagogical opportunity to introduce students to what constitutes a play, dramaturgical analysis, and the relationship between text and performance.”

In the coming weeks, watch for more news as Tisch Drama presents addional performances and special events in the Iris Cantor Theater.
