Playwright Rogelio Martinez’s work has been produced, workshopped, and commissioned by major theaters nationwide, including the Public Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Repertory, Atlantic Theater Company, Arden Theater, Asolo Repertory, TheaterWorks, Ojai Theater Company, and En Garde Arts. His plays are published by Broadway Play Publishing. Martinez is the recipient of both a Princess Grace Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
He is co-producer of Billion Dollar Whale, created by David Henry Hwang and Anchuli Felicia King, and is currently developing a film about North Korea based on the book The Rebel and The Kingdom. Martinez has also written for Nickelodeon and worked on a 2021 television project with Tom Fontana based on Year of Dangerous Days.
Martinez’s Cold War trilogy includes Ping Pong (Public Theater), Born in East Berlin (San Francisco Playhouse; translated into Hungarian and Romanian; presented at the Stasi Museum in Berlin), and Blind Date (Goodman Theatre, directed by Robert Falls). Other work includes When Tang Met Laika at the Denver Center and The Seven Deadly Sins for Miami New Drama, which won the Drama League Award for Outstanding Interactive or Socially Distanced Theater. His play Elián premiered at Miami New Drama in 2022 to critical acclaim.
This year, Syracuse Stage produced his play The National Pastime. Upcoming projects include commissions from Miami New Drama (The Scar/Face Project) and the Arden (Property Value).
Martinez has translated the work of both Mexican and Cuban playwrights into English.
