Rogelio Martinez has been commissioned and produced by major theaters in the United States including the Public Theater and the Denver Center. His work has been seen off-Broadway, regionally, and internationally. Rogelio is the winner of a 2017 Guggenheim Award. He is the recipient of the first ever Mid-Career Fellowship at the Lark Theater Company. He was the youngest playwright to be selected to join New Dramatists. He has been profiled in American Theater Magazine. His early play, Illuminating Veronica, is discussed extensively in Cuba Inside Out: Revolution and Contemporary Theatre. Rogelio has worked both nationally and internationally teaching playwriting and workshopping his own work.
Additionally, he has written for children’s television, PBS, and MTV Films. In 2011, Rogelio addressed the Albany State Legislature on the subject of arts funding. His latest project, BLIND DATE, was commissioned by the Denver Center and it was part of this year’s Goodman Theatre Season. The play mixes fact and fiction to tell the story of the first ever meeting between Soviet General Secretary Gorbachev and President Reagan. Tony Award winning actress Deanna Dunagan played Nancy Reagan. The play is the last in his Cold War Trilogy. BLIND DATE was a recipient of a Laurents Hatcher Foundation Citation of Excellence. BORN IN EAST BERLIN will be workshopped this coming summer at TheaterWorks. He has just finished a new play for ShadowCatcher Entertainment.
