Mia Rovegno

Mia Rovegno is a Brooklyn-based director, writer and puppeteer specializing in experimental investigative, site-specific, and immersive works for stage, screen, and experience.

Recent directing includes her debut narrative short Full Disclosure (premiere: NY Shorts International Film Festival), Miami Motel Stories (named in Vogue Magazine; Inphantry’s Best Brand Experiences and Activations at Art Basel & Miami Art Week), The Civilians’ The Way They Live at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (named in The New Yorker’s Favorite Cultural Moments of 2015), The Blind, an immersive audio/visual virtual journey through the senses co-created with Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew (HERE Arts Center), and ELEVATOR, a 3-channel immersive video installation premiering in the 2023 Under the Radar Festival (The Public Theater).

Mia’s plays have been developed by BRIC, The Public Theater, P73, New Georges (affiliated artist), The Civilians (associate artist), Culture Project, Perishable and others. She is a recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship, The Devised Theater Working Group, ONEBRIClab Performing Arts Residency, 2 Drama League Directing Fellowships in Theater & Film/Television (CBS’s Madam Secretary), New Georges Audrey Residency, 3 Berkeley Rep Ground Floor Residencies, Catwalk Residency, Vermont Studio Center Residency, NY State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Grant, Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Observership, Alper Fellowship (Manhattan Theater Club) & P73’s Yale Residency. Mia is an alumna of The Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, The Civilians R & D Group, Lincoln Center Directors Lab, Women’s Project Theater Directors Lab, New Georges Jam & St. Ann’s Puppet Lab. 

Mia was Associate Director for the acclaimed immersive theater productions of Sweeney Todd (Tooting Arts Club/Barrow St Theater) and The Tenant (Woodshed Collective/West Park), and Assistant Director for Time Stands Still on Broadway (MTC). She has developed and directed new works for Playwrights Horizons, HERE, Soho Rep, LaMaMa, New Group, WP Theater, New York Theater Workshop, St Anne’s Warehouse, Joe’s Pub, Berkeley Rep, Classic Stage, 59E59, INTAR, The O’Neill, Ars Nova, Clubbed Thumb, New York Stage & Film, Playwrights Realm, Atlantic, Labyrinth, Bushwick Starr, JACK, TerraNOVA, EST, The Amoralists, A.R.T., Partial Comfort (company member) and IAMA.

Mia was the 2016 Playwright in Residence for the Rutgers MFA Playwriting Program, and has taught and directed at Brown, The New School, Fordham, LIU, and others. She currently teaches at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), Production & Design Studio and Playwrights Horizons Theater School. Prior to NYU, she was an Assistant Professor at Hunter College, where she was awarded funding to introduce her Experiments in Interdisciplinary Performance curriculum. Mia’s cross-disciplinary practice is included in Routledge’s upcoming publication of Experiential Theatres: Praxis-Based Approaches to Training 21st Century Theatre Artists. Mia holds an MFA in Directing from Brown University and a BS in Performance Studies from Northwestern University (minor: Integrated Arts).
