Jonathan Hart
Associate Arts Professor
Jonathan Hart Makwaia is an Associate Arts Professor in the Department of Drama’s Experimental Theatre Wing (ETW) at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. He is a vocalist and composer specializing in the extended voice. His voice and theatre training was with the pioneering vocal group, Roy Hart Theatre of France. He moved with the company from London to Malerargues, France, to pursue intensive research into the possibilities of the voice and exchange with artists from the European avant-garde theatre of the 70s and 80s.
Jonathan was composer and musical director for the Roy Hart Theatre until 1988. He is currently president of the Roy Hart Theatre Association, responsible for artistic, pedagogical, and research activities at the Roy Hart International Arts Centre in France. As a solo performer he has given concerts worldwide, which have been called “a spectacular display of vocal timbres and techniques” by the New York Times (available on CD, “The Wild Is Rising”).
Awards include an Obie, Prix Jean Vilar, First Prize at the Charles Dullin Festival in Paris, and being selected by the Ministry of Culture to represent France on a tour of Latin America. Hart began teaching as an adjunct professor at NYU in 1989. He has been teaching voice at ETW for 30 years.,
