In an era of “fake news” and “alternative facts,” Bending The Frame, based upon a book of the same name by Fred Ritchin, presents a variety of image-based strategies from documentary photography and visual journalism that, when combined with contemporary art practices, “bend the frame” with the intention of creating greater social impact and a wider discussion that may then lead to social change.
In celebration of Tisch Community Day, the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program will hold its own Community Day event which will open with a message by Sarah Schlesinger, Chair of the Department and Associate Dean of the Institute of Performing Arts.
At this special event, admissions representatives from multiple NYU graduate schools, centers, and institutes are on hand to talk with you about their programs and their application processes. This event will feature a screening of the film that was beautifully restored by Milestone Films from producer Barney Rosset’s original 1948 nitrate interpositive. Milestone Films' co-founders, Dennis Doros and Amy Heller, will introduce the film, speaking about their experiences with Rosset, the preservation process, and a brief conclusion that Hurwitz added to the film in the 1960s.
This talk is based on the book project Intimate Relations, where Amelia Jones traces the interrelated histories of the terms “queer” and “performative” since 1950 in anglophone discourse. This genealogy suggests that the terms have deeply informed not only our thinking about queer, about performance and the performative, and about queer performance, but as well our understanding of how art works and comes to have cultural value (or not) over the past 70 years.
