UGFTV professor and esteemed film critic Glen Kenny’s new book Made Men: The Story of ‘Goodfellas’ was released earlier this week. In it Kenny offers up a first-of-its-kind chronicling of Goodfellas, from the making-of to its indelible contributions to the modern gangster movie—particularly the genre’s characterizations of depraved but addictive characters. Slant Magazine reviewed the book ahead of its release and praised its effectiveness in moving Goodfellas away from a “masturbatory ode to guy’s behaving badly” and into a more “microscopic” and “nuanced” place.

Additionally, in this week’s New York Times Critics’ Notebook edition examining the enduring impact of ‘90s crime movies, Kenny is quoted about Goodfellas and its portrayal of “mobsters having other aspects of their lives.”

Congratulations to Professor Kenny on this tremendous achievement!
