Former Adjunct Professor Frank WANG Yefeng’s Avatopology 2.0: 9% Grin, 33% Groove continues his long-term investigation into digital characters, mobility, and “in-between” subjectivities, examining how digital nomadic labor circulates, transforms, and becomes obscured through decentralized networks of image production.

Working with 33 digital freelancers across the world, Yefeng began with a blurred photograph of himself and developed a six-stage relay of image translation. Each participant received only the output immediately preceding their own contribution, allowing the image to branch, shift between 2D and 3D forms, and continually change through each creator’s interpretation. The process ultimately produced nine avatars assembled from these distributed exchanges.
