Industry publication Photo District News has named two Department of Photography & Imaging alumni in its annual list of 30 Emerging Photographers To Watch.

Nicholas Calcott ('05) and Sasha Arutyunova ('11) were selected for exemplary commerical and editorial work as well as captivating personal projects.

Much of Arutyunova's personal work centers on multiculturalism and immigration. She came to the United States as a child, but frequently travels to her native Russia where she continues to work on a long-term project.

Sasha's work frequently appears in high profile publications including the New York Times, bringing a distinctive visual perspective to everything she approaches.

Nicholas Calcott also brings a unique aesthetic to his projects. His signature style emphasizes color and geometry, which has attracted some impressive freelance clients including T: The New York Times Style Magazine and Fast Company.

In an interview with PDN Online's Sarah Coleman, Calcott recalled a difficult few years after graduation. He persevered, though, and is continuing to gain recognition in NYC's commerical and editorial photography industry.

“In the photo world, it’s difficult not to be pigeonholed,” Nicholas told PDN, “The joy of the medium is the joy of experimenting.”
