DPI Alum Hank Willis Thomas To Design Coretta Scott King and MLK Jr. Memorial

Artist and DPI alum Hank Willis Thomas and MASS Design Group have been chosen to design the Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Boston, MA. The winning design is entitled "The Embrace" and it is a bronze-finish sculpture of two pairs of giant arms embracing each other. The 22-foot-high proposed sculpture was inspired by an iconic photo of the Kings embracing after King Jr. had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (see below). The photo, Thomas said, looks almost as if Coretta is supporting Martin's weight. It will be displayed on the Boston Common.
