Chair Deb Willis Co-Hosts Aperture's "Vision and Justice" Issue Launch

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

Chair Deb Willis's work will be featured in issue #223 of Aperture magazine accompanied by an essay by Dr. Cheryl Finley of Harvard University. The issue, guest edited by Sarah Lewis, will be published on May 24, 2016.

On May 10, 2016 department chair Deb Willis co-hosted the launch of the latest issue of Aperture magazine at the Ford Foundation alongside fellow contributors Garnette Cadogan, Margo Jefferson, Chelsea Clinton, Hank Willis Thomas (NYU Tisch '98), Carrie Mae Weems, and others. "Vision & Justice" is a special issue devoted to addressing the role of photography in the African American experience. From guest editor Sarah Lewis' introduction to the issue:

"No matter the topic—beauty, family, politics, power—the quest for a legacy of photographic representation of African-Americans has been about these two things. The centuries-long effort to craft an image to pay honor to the full humanity of black life is a corrective task for which photography and cinema have been central, even indispensable."

An article about the issue was featured The New York Times Lens Blog on May 10, 2016 by editor James Estrin. Follow the hashtag #VisionJustice on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to join the world wide conversation on the representation of the black experience.
