DPI Chair Dr. Deborah Willis Opens Retrospective Exhibition at Brooklyn College on March 4, 2025

We are thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition Saturation: Beauty in the Everyday by Professor Deborah Willis at The Art Gallery at Boylan Hall Brooklyn College, Lower Level, opening on March 4th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This exhibition, curated by Bentley Brown of NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, offers a career survey of the pioneering photographer, historian, and MacArthur Fellow's work.
Dr. Deb Willis' photography explores the notion of saturation as both an aesthetic and conceptual tool, delving into the politics of visibility and the rich layers of personal, cultural, and historical narratives that inform her practice. Drawing from themes as varied as her personal wardrobe to the Civil War, Willis uses beauty and intimacy to highlight expressions of everyday life, particularly within the Black community. Her images evoke deep emotional resonance while also focusing on cultural aspirations, freedom, and beauty.
The exhibition will be on view at The Art Gallery at Brooklyn College from March 4th to April 1st. Join us for this powerful exploration of the intersection of art, history, and identity.
