Yuliia Linnik

Bio
I am a theatre artist and curator from Ukraine. My recent work includes curating the educational program at the Kyiv National Young Theatre, producing performance GALA by French choreographer Jérôme Bel, writing and staging theatre performance Ophelia and Polonius Meet in the Summerhouse. 

Together with my theatre cohort, I had ran an informal theatre group called Shadow Room where during the 4 years of our work we developed our own dramaturgy, worked with no director, collaborated with La MaMa, used journalistic recordings of conversations between corrupt officials as a materials for our stage experiments and simply had a lot of fun together. This period is over, I moved to New York, while co-director of Shadow Room Daniel is currently undergoing basic general military training to become a soldier.

Currently, I am working on developing a publishing house called Nonexistheatre, which will focus on translating and publishing theatre and performance theory in Ukrainian.

Why Performance Studies?
My main focus in the studies is to develop the ability to look at theatre and performance art from different angles and to see what may have been hidden from me. I want to use all the time and attention I have here to discover theatre as a physical and symbolic common space where people go through an intellectual and sensual journey toward something they have not encountered before.

I think that intellectual space witing the Performance Studies department will give me an opportunity to think deeper and slower, to encounter contradictions, and to enrich and reconstruct the way I see theatre, the stage, and the act itself.
