Juliana Alvarado

Bio:
I'm a first-year Performance Studies student interested in the ways performance and movement shape our world. I've danced for several years and have experience as a dancer, choreographer, dance captain, and teacher, which has made me especially interested in the relationship between performance and identity. At NYU, I'm excited to explore performance both onstage and through academic research, while also exploring my interests in entertainment, media, and the ways creative work reaches and connects with audiences.

Why Performance Studies at NYU?
I chose to study Performance Studies because I’ve always seen performance as more than just what happens on a stage. Through my experiences as a dancer, choreographer, dance captain, and teacher, I’ve seen how movement can communicate identity, emotion, and stories that words sometimes can’t. I wanted to study not only how we perform, but also why we perform, how performance shapes the way we understand one another, and how it connects with culture, media, and entertainment. I really like that Performance Studies gives me the opportunity to bring together my love for dance with my curiosity about people, storytelling, and creative industries, while exploring all the different ways performance exists in our everyday lives.
