Bo-me Koo
2026 MA Symposium
Bo-me Koo, a student in Performance and Theatre Studies from Seoul, Republic of Korea, began her academic journey to explain and apply her own attraction towards theatre. She received her Bachelor's degrees in Aesthetics and Communications, and a Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Performing Arts Studies at Seoul National University. She is working on her 2nd Master's degree here in NYU Performance Studies, and is planned to continue her studies at the Theatre and Performance Doctorate program at CUNY Graduate Center. With this academic background, Bo-me is enthusiastic in critically reassessing the medium of theatre and what kinds of messages it can carry, especially regarding the complex concepts and prejudices surrounding the illusion and representation in theatre.
Project Title: Between stage and life: Daydreaming and (meta-)theatricality
Project Description: This project shares personal reflections, questions, and process surrounding Bo-me's ongoing research on the rebellious nature of theatrical representation. Incorporating investigations surrounding theatre medium and semiotics, Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty, the experience of absurdity, and the structures of metatheatricality, she connects her own experiences regarding the questions of existence and imagination to the process in which theatre illusion takes place. Especially, this project intends to reflect the method researcher often uses to organize her ideas, through images, walks, daydreams, and play-reading/writing.
