The Department of Performance Studies' Ph.D. student, Kiana Karimi, was selected as a 2019-2020 Doctoral Fellow at the Urban Democracy Lab at NYU's Gallatin School Of Individualized Studies. As a Doctoral Fellow in Urban Practice, she will work with Women's Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco) in South Bronx for the launch of the Bronx Commons and Bronx Music Hall. The fellowship is conceived by The Urban Democracy Lab whose vision is to bridge the divide between disciplines, between practice and scholarship, and between universities and community stakeholders. It’s a vision that Kiana has been deeply committed to and put in action in her decade-long experience as a social activist.

Kiana has also been honored with the Alpine Fellowship for her essay on Identify. The Alpine Fellowship supports students who are dedicated to exploring cross-disciplinary questions of the contemporary age. The competition included GSAS graduate students and two Ph.D. students. She will present her essay in August at the Alpine Symposium.
