The Fourth Annual José Esteban Muñoz Memorial Lecture

The Department of Performance Studies inaugurated the distinguished José Esteban Muñoz Memorial Lectures, on an annual basis, starting in the Spring of 2016. We envisioned the series as an annual event that both honors the memory of this celebrated teacher and scholar, and focuses attention on the cutting edge of the field of Performance Studies.

NOT YET HERE: CRUISING UTOPIA @10

The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality and the Department of Performance Studies at NYU  celebrated the 10th anniversary of José Esteban Muñoz's groundbreaking monograph Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity, with a roundtable discussion featuring Lauren Berlant (University of Chicago), Jack Halberstam (Columbia University), Tavia Nyong'o (Yale University), and Juana María Rodríguez (UC Berkeley), as well as performances by Kevin Aviance and Lady Quesa'Dilla. This opportunity to closely return to Muñoz's seminal work ten years later was equally an homage, celebration, and critical look at how Cruising Utopia lives on.
